Perpetual Purpose Trust

WE ARE PROUD TO BE A

Perpetual Purpose

Trust-Owned Company!

In June of 2023 The Walker Group officially became a Perpetual Purpose Trust-Owned Company! Since 2007, we have operated as a social enterprise, with a commitment to at least 1/3 of distributable profits going back into the community and in 2014 we solidified this by becoming a registered Benefit Corporation (B-Corp).  Our transition to becoming a Perpetual Purpose Trust-Owned Company ensures that purpose remains at the forefront of what we do…in perpetuity!

What is a Perpetual Purpose Trust?

A Perpetual Purpose Trust (PPT) is a legal and organizational structure that allows a company to operate with a focus on achieving their overarching goal of creating purpose or impact rather than focusing on maximizing profits alone.  The company is owned by a trust and governed by the company leadership and it’s employees, while often getting operational oversight by a Board of Directors.

Why did we transition to this ownership model?

After being the sole owner for 37 years, The Walker Group founder, Kate Emery, began to imagine what her next phase of life would look like, and she quickly realized that a traditional sale of the company just wouldn’t be an option.  In her own words, “I spent my entire career building a different kind of business and I needed to ensure that no one person could ever un-do this work”.  After investigating several different ownership models for the future of The Walker Group, she ultimately landed with the PPT.   While this model has made the news recently with large companies such as Patagonia, The Walker Group is now the first company in the state of CT to adopt this ownership structure, emphasizing its dedication to positive contributions to society, and ethical practices.
